Afraid to Shine?

I had just put in my two weeks notice at Whole Foods Market a week prior, and was getting more and more anxious about my new job. My dream job! The one I prayed and waited for. I am now working at a job in my field working with children with special needs! The way he job even came up was a miracle in itself! As I was waiting to start my new job, I more at peace than I thought I would be. Every now and then I would have moments where I would question if I was ready. Isn’t that funny? We pray and pray for things and then when God blesses us with what we ask for we say, ” God are you sure?”

I bless God for placing me around wonderful people at Whole Foods that spoke life to me every time I doubted myself. I shared with some of them my fears, and anxieties about stepping into this new phase of life. I would tell some of them “I’m getting nervous!” “What if I’m not ready?” They would say things like, “Girl you better get in there and shine!”,”Take that smile with you, and you’ll be fine!”, “You are more than ready! God has equipped you!”. Although it’s kind of funny now, the comment that stuck out the most to me is when one of my fellow supervisors told me to “Shine bright like diamond!”

Of course Rihanna’s song popped in my head, but days past by, and then weeks, and what my co-worker had said to me was still ringing in my spirit, “Shine bright like a diamond!” Most times when that happens, when something sticks with me, I ask God what it means. So I did, and his response blew me away (as always lol). He gave me these verses from Matthew 5. One of my favorite books of the bible. It says, “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

I could almost shed a tear right now. This verse woke something up in me! Jesus! What’s the use in turning the lamp on, if you’re just going to cover it up? What I sensed the Lord saying to me along with someone reading this, is “Don’t hide your light.” You light is meant to shine before all people, so that our God in heaven can be glorified. I didn’t understand the impression I was giving my co -workers at Whole Foods, but I’m so glad they understood my heart’s cry. In all things I shared with them, what I was really saying was, “What if they don’t accept me?” “I know I’m different…what if I’m not their cup of tea?” “What if I’m to bubbly and light?” God is saying in this next season don’t be concerned with that! The darker the place, the more you’ll shine! Some people will run from your light, some will try to dim your light, and some will be attracted to what we carry, and we must not hide it under a basket! We must lift God up, so he can draw all men to him (John 12:32).

What I’m saying is don’t be afraid to shine! Don’t water yourself down! Let people experience the concentrated you! That is your real strength. God can get the most glory from who we are, when we are who he has created us to be! So L’ll leave you with what my co-worker told me. SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND!

  2. That’s it! Great message sis!! It’s so funny how you read a scripture in the past, you grow in the faith, come back to that same scripture, and it literally speaks more volumes than when you first read it. That’s excscly how I feel about the Matthew verse that you highlighted. Our job as believers I literally to bring the light wherever we go no matter what the reactions from others may be.
    Thanks for sharing! Love you❤️
