I have recently been slowly making my way through the book of Matthew. I have read Matthew and the other gospels (Mark, Luke, and John) before. However, lately I’ve just been having a yearning to get closer to God and really have a relationship with Him. In order to have a relationship with someone you have to get to know them. In the Gospels of the bible is where Jesus came to earth and talked with people, formed relationships, and performed miracles. We get to know Jesus here, as a man. I encourage you to spend time reading about Jesus in the Gospels when you get a chance.
In reading Matthew I came across Matthew 21:18-22 its reads: ‘In the morning, as Jesus was returning to Jerusalem, he was hungry, and he noticed a fig tree beside the road. He went over to see if there were any figs, but there were only leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” And immediately the fig tree withered up. The disciples were amazed when they saw this and asked, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.”
It got me to thinking…when was the last time I prayed with absolutely NO doubt? When was the last time I prayed and believed 100% in my heart that God would do that thing I asked of Him. I wonder how God feels when we doubt Him? In my head he’s like “Don’t they realize who I am? Don’t they know I want the very best for them and I love them?” Don’t they know I want to give them the desires of their hearts?” So why do we doubt? Why do we pray and doubt? We doubt because we are humans who have been let down by other humans (amoung others things) but the bible says in Numbers 23:19 “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?”
So in Matthew Jesus is guaranteeing us that if we pray by faith we will receive what we ask for. “Faith is the CONFIDENCE, not doubt, that what we hope for will actually happen. It gives us assurance about the things we cannot see” Hebrews 11:1. Let’s take God up on his offer today and actually BELIEVE that what we are praying for will come to pass. Let’s not offend God by wishing and hoping that he will do it. Let’s be bold and say “I pray by Faith because I believe that if what I’m praying for is your will it WILL come to pass.” Amen.
A Prayer For Today:
Father in the name of Jesus, we thank you and honor you today for being just who you are and for loving us. We thank you that your love and kindness for us is unfailing. We thank you today that you want what’s best for our lives. Help us Jesus not to be timid in our prayer time with you. Help us to get to know you and build a relationship with you so we will feel comfortable to be open and honest with you and be encouraged by your power to move on our behalf. Help us not to bring you to our level of doubt but bring us up to your level of Faith. Speak to us and help us to believe that your will, will be done and that if we pray by faith we will receive what we ask for. We love you Lord and we thank you again. In Jesus name we pray and believe. Amen!
